Biography

Inge Harrison qualified as an registered General Nurse (BSc Hons) in 1987. Post-registration, she continued nursing in the UK and Australia in a variety of specialties, both medical and surgical.

Since 2008, Inge has been the Thyroid Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. This was a newly created position, initially for only one day a week, primarily as an Endocrine CNS.

In 2014, she established a Nurse-led Telephone Clinic for the long term follow-up of thyroid cancer patients. This has continued to develop and her expertise has been sought by teams nationwide establishing similar services in other centres.

In 2017, Inge moved to a dedicated Thyroid Cancer CNS role and has been able to increase her support to thyroid cancer patients. She meets all new patients, supports patients on radioiodine and tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies and signposts patients to sources of psychological support.

Inge is a member of the Society for Endocrinology and has presented for the British Thyroid Foundation at patient group meetings. She also presented at the 2020 Thyroid Cancer Nurse Network Meeting and is a member of the network.

In her position, Ingrid also supports patients from two English centres via a ‘virtual’ CNS service, i.e. providing information and support over phone and email.

Among her other responsibilities, Ingrid also runs a telephone follow-up clinic for low-risk thyroid cancer patients, leads on the UK Low Iodine Diet Working Group and is involved in the development of patient information materials detailing recent changes in the treatment of thyroid cancer.

Ingrid provides support for her colleagues working in healthcare in various ways. For example, she is building up and managing a network of Thyroid Cancer CNSs, providing a platform to share information, good practice and educational materials. The network also provides formal teaching, not only on an individual basis, but also through conferences and master’s courses. Ingrid has also co-authored a chapter on thyroid cancer for a textbook aimed at endocrinology nurses.

Nicola Armstrong, RN/DipHE, Advanced Diploma in Practice Education and Development, BSc (Hons) Practice Development.

Nicola trained at Northumbria University and qualified in 2000. Since then, she has worked within rheumatology, elderly care, acute medicine, orthopaedic rehabilitation and ear, nose and throat. Since 2010, Nicola has worked in the role of Thyroid Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Through her clinical experiences, Nicola has developed a special interest in survivorship issues within thyroid cancer and provides ‘moving on groups’ and survivorship events for patients under her care.

Nicola is an active member of the Thyroid Cancer UK forum: she presents at Thyroid Cancer Nurse Network Meetings and presents annually on the use of Holistic Needs Assessments as part of the Newcastle Upon Tyne trust level 2 psychology training. Alongside her teaching responsibilities, Nicola has co-written a book chapter on the role of the Clinical Psychologist and the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Thyroid Cancer care.
